Measure twice, buy once
Buying a helmet based on the size printed inside your old one is a bit like buying boots without trying them on because your last pair was a 43.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes you spend the next three years wondering why your forehead hurts after forty minutes.
A good helmet should fit snugly and evenly around your entire head. Not painfully tight. Not comfortably loose. Snug.
Different brands, and even different models from the same brand, can fit differently, so forget the idea that you are permanently a Medium.
Start with a tape measure
Run a soft measuring tape around the widest part of your head, roughly:
- 1–2 cm above your eyebrows
- just above your ears
- around the widest point at the back
Do it twice.
If the numbers disagree, do it a third time.
Then compare that measurement with the size chart for the helmet you actually want to buy.
Simple.
Trying it on once you got it
Once the helmet is on, grab it and move it left to right.
Your skin should move with the helmet.
If the shell happily rotates while your head stays put, it’s too loose. If you have a sharp pressure point on your forehead or temples after a few minutes, the shape or size might be wrong.
Some helmets have interchangeable cheek pads to further personalise the fit. New cheek pads usually soften slightly with use, so “a little snug” is not automatically bad.
Head shape matters
This gets ignored all the time.
Two people can both measure 58 cm and need completely different helmets because one has a rounder head and the other a longer oval shape.
That’s why trying a helmet on beats obsessing over the letter on the box.
Our rule
A helmet should disappear once you’re riding.
You shouldn’t spend the next two hours thinking about your cheek pads, forehead or chin bar.
Get the measurement right. Get the shape right. Then go ride.
